Established over 50 years ago by John McKay and his son Greg, McKays has built a reputation for quality meats at reasonable prices and is known as one of the best butchers in Melbourne. Since changing hands in July 2022, the new owners have continued this legacy, proudly serving the community as a trusted butcher in Rowville.
McKays employs skilled butchers who use traditional methods, breaking down whole animals to deliver the best quality meat for flavour and consistency, with preparation done in-store for customers to see. Their expanded range comes from ethical, sustainable Australian producers, including home-made sausages, grass-fed roasts and steaks, lamb, free-range pork, hormone-free chicken and turkey, plus pre-made meals. They also offer spit hire in Melbourne for event catering, custom cuts, and expert advice to ensure customers get the best from every purchase. Meet Our Team
Kevin (“Big Kev”)
Born in the UK, Kevin and his family migrated to Australia when he was 10. He began his apprenticeship at age 14 working alongside commercial butchers and bought his first butcher shop at 19. Besides owning and managing butcher shops, he has gained additional butchering experience working in abattoirs and boning rooms. In July 2022, he joined McKays as their Butcher Manager, where he has taken the quality and variety of meat products to new heights. Kevin also enjoys advancing the skills of his butchery team by sharing his knowledge with them gained over many years in the industry. Kevin’s main focus at McKays is on superior customer service and he takes particular pride in offering his customers his homemade sausages and special cuts. He especially enjoys having a chat with his customers and on occasion, serenading them with his special vocal talents.
Devon
Devon was born in New Zealand where he grew up around farms. This fostered his interest in high-quality, clean and ethically sourced meat products. His passion is Butchery and the farm-to-fork concept. His goal is to have his own butchery business someday and use some of the cattle from his family’s small, rural farm in Yea. Devon recently received his Australian citizenship and is now a very proud Aussie! Devon continues to hone his skills at McKays under the guidance of Master Butcher Kevin and the team at McKays.
Dan
Like Devon, growing up on a farm and butchering their own meat created Dan’s passion for learning the nuances of professional butchery. Dan began in the meat business at 16 working with professional and dedicated butchers trained in the art of shaping a great cut of meat and eventually became a full-time butcher. Working with the team at McKays Family Butchers, and especially with Big Kev — his mentor – has offered Dan the opportunity to use his butchery skills to the fullest while enjoying the camaraderie of his mates. Dan is also interested in cooking and developing new dishes which he often shares with customers.

Our ethically sourced, MSA certified, grass-fed beef is hormone and antibiotic free. Pork, lamb and poultry are free range, raised without hormones or antibiotics. All are 100% Australian meat!
